In Florida Case, Louis Vuitton Seeks Website Shutdowns

A case in Florida could force web hosts to pull the plug on hundreds of websites knocking off luxury accessory creator Louis Vuitton.

Examples of domains targeted in the suit include 100wholesale. com, bagbay. biz, cheaphandbags. com, and other websites including the mention of ?°Louis Vuitton?± in their web addresses.

?°Defendants are promoting, selling, offering for sale and distributing goods bearing counterfeits and confusingly similar imitations of Plaintiff?ˉs trademarks within this judicial district through various fully interactive Internet websites and supporting blogs operating under their partnership and/or business association names identified on Schedule ?°A?± hereto (the ?°Subject Domain Names?±), ?± alleged the company in its lawsuit.

According to a report from GigaOM, the case mimics a similar suit previously brought on by fashion company Chanel. In particular, that lawsuit forced web hosts including Go Daddy to comply with modifying domain name systems, as demanded through court orders.

While a ruling in the case has yet to be reached, it could have similar ramifications.

Even without the passage of legislation including the Stop Online Piracy Act, website shutdowns brought on through court orders remain common. In January, the U. S. Department of Justice forced the closure of file sharing website Megaupload. Authorities alleged that Megaupload founders including Kim DotCom made millions in illegal profits through the sharing of pirated files.
